Gamariel Harerimana Gasasira aka Gama, is a freelance model. Currently, he is contesting in Mount Kenya University Beauty pageant that takes place today. Society Magazine’s Stephen Kalimba caught up with him for insights in his fashion world.

Do you think hard about what to wear for the day?

In my line of work, I meet different people. So, I go for clothes that are fit for the occasion. I want to look like an ordinary person but when I go for a particular event, I dress accordingly.

As a model you must have a routine.

I don’t plan what to wear. When I wake up, I wear what I see. I’m used to wearing clothes that designers have in their collection. You can only know I’m a model if you look at how I walk, but most people don’t even know how models walk.

Who is your designer?

My wife Noeli Mutesi is my designer. We met at a fashion show. She knows what suits me best. When she goes out shopping, she asks if I want anything and that’s how I get my clothes.

Anything she has bought for you that stood out?

She once bought me a flat cap and strangely,I liked it because I wasn’t a fan of flat caps at the time. It really stood out. Then, she also got me a tailor-made suit which I have never seen with anyone.

What accessories do you wear?

I like chains and African craft necklaces. They show who we are as Africans.

Who was your favourite contestant in Miss Rwanda 2015?

Vanessa Raissa Uwase, the first runner-up. She was the best. Beyond our borders, I like model Georgette Mutoni, she is really good in her trade.

What would you advise people not to wear?

We shouldn’t just copy styles. If Wiz Khalifa wears sagging shirts and tight pants, he has a reason and you might not have that same reason. He may not necessarily be a role model in his own society.

Any fashion advice?

People should copy good trends, like from somebody you look up to. I don’tcopy anyone who isn’t a good example in his society.When you’re smart you’ll get some respect. There are great clothes for everybody; children, teenagers and adults, even if you don’t have any style of your own.
