A man was yesterday evening fatally wounded after an attempt to disarm a police officer on duty ended in a bloody scuffle that left the man dead and the police officer seriously injured.
According to the Police Spokesperson Chief Supt Celestin Twahirwa, the man, identified as Dr Gasakure, asked to use the toilet and on his way assaulted the officer.
"The deceased requested to go for a short call, was allowed but on getting out of the cell assaulted the officer on guard and tried to disarm him. In the ensuing scuffle the deceased was fatally wounded while the police officer sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital,” the spokesperson said.
The incident took place shortly after 6:30 p.m., at Remera Police Station in Kigali.
The deceased was a suspect being held in Police custody as part of investigations into offences that include illegal entry on other person's property, causing damage to property, illegal confinement and issuing threats.
"Investigations into the unfortunate incident have been launched. The police regrets the incident and will keep the families informed as the investigation proceeds,” the spokesperson added.
