Former France national team head coach Raymond Domenech has applied for the position of national football team (Amavubi) head coach.
According to a press release from Rwanda Football Federation, the 63-year-old is among 39 coaches who are interested in taking up the Amavubi job following Stephen Constantine’s resignation last month.
Domenech was in charge of France from 2004-2010, coaching the golden generation of Les Blues that lost to Italy in the 2006 World Cup final in Berlin.
The French team at the time included star players like Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, Claude Makelele, Robert Pires and David Trezeguet among others.
Domenech joins a long list of foreign coaches interested in the job, including former Rayon Sports head coach Didier Gomes da Rosa (France), ex-APR tactician Rene Feller (Netherlands) as well as former Zimbabwe coach Roy Maicol Barreto (Portugal) and former Sierra Leone coach Johnny McKinstry (Ireland).
Former Niger coach Patrice Neveu from France who also coached Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo and Mauritania has once again applied for the Amavubi job having been included on a five-man shortlist in 2008.
Ferwafa technical director Lee Johnson said that, "For Ferwafa, it is very good to get high profile coaches applying for the Amavubi job. This goes to show the level of interest that Rwanda is making across Africa and the world.”
Johnson also believes that Constantine’s success in the eight months that he was in charge including registering a historic 68th position on the Fifa world rankings, has created a "massive impact and raised the awareness of football in Rwanda.”
With the Africa Nations Cup (Chan) coming up next year, Johnson explained that, "It is an amazing competition that everyone wants to be a part of. Every coach wants to be on the big stage and coaches recognise that and want to be a part of the continued success.”List of coaches interested in Amavubi job:
