After the 4-0 humiliation in the national football league, Rayon Sports have shifted focus to the upcoming Caf Confederation Cup second leg game against Cameroonian side Panthère Sportive du Nde this weekend at Amahoro Stadium.
The defeat was the biggest for Rayon this season and it leaves them in 5th position with 25 points, 13 behind leaders and runaway champions, APR with 10 rounds of matches remaining.
Rayon Sports interim head Coach Sosthene Habimana was left disappointed with the heavy loss at the hands of APR but wants to forget that result and prepare his team for a bigger challenge ahead.
He said, "Yes we lost the game badly and it hurts, but we don’t have a lot of time to dwell on that loss. What we can do is to correct our mistakes on the training ground and turn the team around in the next few days as we have a bigger game coming up at the weekend.”
"This loss is a lesson for us, but it’s my duty as coach to try and prepare the team and I hope it will not affect our confidence for the next game,” he added.
Rayon Sports played very well in the first half and could have even taken the lead but they didn’t before going on to crumple in the second half where they conceded four goals in a space of 15 minutes. Three of APR goals came from set pieces.
Striker Michel Ndahinduka opened the scoring in the 75th minute and four minutes later, defender Emery Bayisenge added a second from a well taken free-kick while midfielder Yannick Mukunzi and Maxime Sekamana netted the third and fourth in the 85th and 87th minutes respectively.
"We have made mistakes against APR which killed the game, the players were not concentrating for the set pieces and APR are a strong team on set pieces so we got punished but we need to correct those mistakes and concentrate on the Confederation Cup,” Habimana stated.
Rayon Sports won first leg 1-0 in Doula last weekend with the all important away goal coming from Leo Uwambajimana. If Rayon Sports progress to the first round, they will meet Egypt giants Zamalek.
