This is in reference to the article, "Midwives, CHWs train in maternal, child health” (The New Times, February 22).

The health professionals should be trained as part of this curriculum on Rights Based Approach (RBA) to maternal health, based on the technical guidance in the application of policies and programmes to reduce preventable maternal morbidity and mortality. One of the principles of RBA is that health is not isolated pathologies; it is premised upon empowering women to claim their rights, and not merely avoiding maternal death or morbidity.

The design, organisation and coordination of the components of the health system should be guided by fundamental human rights principles, including non-discrimination/equality, transparency, participation and accountability.

Many pregnant women face social stigma at health facilities and cases remain unreported because patients are not legally empowered to know their rights.

This approach is very important and will help people to report all violations of their rights.
