Rayon Sports skipper Fuadi Ndayisenga has said his team needs to embark on an unbeaten run if they are to stand chances of winning this year’s league title.
Third-placed Blues host bitter rivals and league leaders APR tomorrow afternoon at Amahoro national stadium in a game that could decide the destiny of the league title. The Nyanza-based Rayon Sports are 10 points adrift of APR after 15 rounds of matches, and a loss for them could spell the end of their title ambitions.
The former APR forward, told this paper that beating their nemesis will not only give the team a psychological boost but it would also mean that they are back in the title race.
"At the moment APR are in the driving seat but that will definitely change if we win Sunday’s game. Our aim is to win our remaining league games to stand a chance of winning the league,” the Burundi international said on Friday.
The APR-Rayon Sports tie is the biggest football fixture in the country and close to 40,000 people are expected to watch the match at Amahoro stadium.
APR assistant captain Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza, who joined the army side in 2007 and has played in 15 games against Rayon Sports, says losing to their arch rivals is something that he always dreads.
"It is a game that neither team wants to lose. As usual there will be tension and some flying tackles but I am confident that we will win,” the former Kiyovu midfielder told Saturday Sport.
Referee Louis Hakizimana will be in charge of the game.
In 41 league matches between the two teams since 1995, Rayon Sports have won 12, APR 16 with the other 13 games ending in draws.
Ex-Amavubi striker Jimmy Gatete, who played for both sides, scored four goals for each team in the games between the two sides.
