Anesie Mahoro was crowned second runner-up at the 2014 Miss Mount Kenya University contest. The 21-year-old student of Information Science is also a part time model. 

Mahoro was also among the 15 finalists during the 2014 Miss Rwanda beauty pageant. She spoke to Society Magazine’s Doreen Umutesi about why it’s important not to let your style stick out like a sore thumb.

How would you describe your dress sense?

I’m an all-rounder when it comes to fashion. I can be classy, sexy or retro. I don’t like showing a lot of skin because I believe in maintaining some secrecy about my body. I also believe that what you wear and how you present yourself is a silent introduction of your personality.

What’s your favourite clothing item?

I love and feel comfortable when I’m in long dresses, especially the ones that Michele Obama wears. (Laughs)

Where do you shop for clothes?

I shop from everywhere, even online. I buy most of my dresses from Dubai and Turkey.

What do you consider when shopping clothes?

I always consider the price and the quality of an outfit when I’m shopping. When I like an outfit and it’s not very expensive, I will buy it.

What is your favourite fashion accessory?

I have a rare liking for handbags and shoes.

What is your favourite clothing item on a guy?

A guy’s shoes and watch will always get my attention.

What’s your favourite scent?

I love Cartier Baiser Vole.

What is the most expensive fashion accessory that you own?

It’s a watch that my elder sister gave me as a present to congratulate me for completing high school.

Any fashion advice?

With fashion, one needs to dress up appropriately and consider comfort. Dress up for the right occasion or ceremony. If for instance it’s a wedding, it will not seem right to wear a t-shirt; you will look odd.
