Artiste Danny Vumbi is a programmes manager and host of Ubibona Ute at Kicukiro based Authentic Radio. He shared some fashion ideas with Society Magazine’s Stephen Kalimba.

What are your preferences when it comes to style?

I like designer jeans, t-shirts and sometimes corporate shirts. I like something cool. For jeans, you can have them for long and they will still look good. I like sneakers too, and I always make sure it’s a big brand like Nike.

Do you have a personal designer?

Yes, there’s this guy called Omar at Dopest Shop in Nyamirambo. He has nice designer clothes; infact, he is a designer for some artistes like King James.

What jewelry do you prefer?

I only wear accessories when performing.You might catch me with a chain, and bracelets but when I’m off stage I keep them. I am not a big fan of jewelry; people sometimes meet me off stage and wonder if it’s me because I look different.

What would get your attention on a woman?

I know they get a lot of attention naturally, but a mini skirt makes a woman look good.

Which international artiste do you admire?

Wiz Kid from Nigeria has a good sense of style.

What style do you think men should avoid?

Well, everybody is entitled to wear what they like but personally, I think Kitenge (African fabric) looks a bit feminine on a man.

What hair style do you fancy?

I like short hair, not too short though, and I use hair chemical sometimes. I used to have an Afro but afro needs a lot time to make it look good. I wouldn’t do dreadlocks, I find them feminine.

So, miniskirts are okay, but dreadlocks on a man are a no?

Yeah, everybody has their way of viewing things.

So what fashion advice do you have to offer?

Long ago people used to cover just a few body parts and it was okay, so when people do the same these days, say with miniskirts, it’s the same thing. People should dress according to their personal interpretation of style as long as they don’t offend anyone. The problem is people want to judge –yet style is relative, it has no formula.
