Janvier Benedata scored the winning goal as SC Kiyovu defeated Police FC 2-1 in the National Football League at the Mumena stadium yesterday
The striker curved a long range shot from the left corner of the penalty box past Police goalkeeper Emery Mvuyekure which hit the inside of the right post in the 61st minute, onto the back of the net to send Kiyovu fans into passionate celebrations.
Police forward Innocent Habyarimana had earlier broken the deadlock in the 32nd minute with a well set up goal from a Jacques Tuyisenge run into the box beating the vulnerable Kiyovu defense.
Kiyovu embarked on a hunt for an equaliser with chances for the league’s top scorer Miamy Mbakiye but the Police defense was solid enough until Yusuf Habimana utilized a lapse in concentration when he converted a well taken long range shot from 30 yards into the left corner leaving Mvuyekure with no chance to save it.
Contented with the three points, Kiyovu head coach Ali Bizimungu said, "The players did everything I asked them to do like playing with determination and that is why we were able to win today. The most important thing is that we won the game and got three points because Police is a good team.”
Kiyovu avenged their 5-0 first round loss to the law enforcers and most notably in front of their fans.
Police FC head coach Andre Cassa Mbungo admitted that Kiyovu was the better side because they played better. He said, "Kiyovu had more determination than we had and that was evident. However, I identified some positives from my players despite the loss.”
The win has seen Kiyovu climb into third position on the table standings with 27 points, eight points behind table leaders APR who have two games in hand. Police sits in fifth position with 24 points with one game in hand.
