Police in Gasabo District have recovered Rwf1.4 million stolen from a shop in Kagugu Cell in Kinyinya Sector on Sunday.
The money was recovered from three people who had posed as clients and duped the shop owner into going to the backyard to allow them time to steal, Police said.
The shop owner alerted Police that he had been robbed and provided particulars of people that were in the shop at the time. The suspects are currently detained at Gisozi Police Station as investigations continue.
"The owner had stepped out when two of the suspects entered and picked money from his locker, while the third remained at the door to keep watch. When he returned, they pretended to be regular customers, but when he checked the drawer, he found that money was missing,” Supt Modeste Mbabazi, Police spokesperson for Kigali City, said.
"The owner quickly alerted Police which arrived in time. Officers pursued and searched the suspects and found them with the money,” he added.
Mbabazi urged business operators to always be on the lookout to avoid following prey to such elements.
