Burera district Council, yesterday, approved the resignation of its president Pierre Celestin Bumbakare, who threw in the towel on grounds that he would be stationed far from the constituency.

In a February 2 resignation letter, a copy of which The New Times has seen, Bumbakare requested that his resignation takes immediate effect.

"The reason I request for resignation is that I work far from the district so I find it difficult to lead the Council as I cannot regularly attend meetings as stipulated by the law,” he said.

Vincent Uwimana, the vice president, acknowledged receipt of the letter, saying it was within Bumbakare’s right to resign from the non-executive position.

He said they have 90 days within which to elect a replacement, according to the law.

Burera mayor Samuel Sembagare said Bumbakare was working outside the country and could not serve as the president of the District Council.

Sources say Bumbakare is expected to move to Central African Republic where he will work as a legal consultant although this newspaper could not indepedently verify this after failing to reach him for a comment.

The mayor described Bumbakare as a good colleague who led as an exemplary leader and had been a good advisor.

Bumbakare previously served at Rwanda Revenue Authority where he was a Commissioner for Domestic Taxes before he was transferred to the Ministry of Justice as the head of legal services department and principal state attorney.
