Police in Kamonyi District have arrested eight suspected drug traffickers.

The arrest is part of Rwanda National Police’s larger narcotics bust involving nationwide operations, cross-border multiple surveillance and multiple sensitisation campaigns.

The suspects, seized during different raids in the suburbs of Kamonyi, are linked to the distribution network of cannabis and other narcotics in the Southern Province.

Police confiscated more than 100 kilogrammes of cannabis from the suspects.

The Southern regional Police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Hubert Gashagaza, said the successful operation was the result of focused planning by RNP and essential information provided by the public through community policing.

"Police are focusing on ensuring that drug trafficking and abuse are completely stumped out of the country because they are destructive, especially to the youth. Some individuals seem determined to continue this illegal trade, but we will stop them,” he said.

"We commend those who provide timely information that facilitate the successful anti-drugs operations and we urge this good cooperation with Police to continue,” Gashagaza added.

 Meanwhile, Police in Bugesera District yesterday raided a plant where illicit brew is distilled and sold to the public.

The operation led to the confiscation and destruction of distilling equipment as well as the arrest of two people suspected to have set up the illegal plant.
