Editor,

I have spent a good deal of time in Rwanda, and have seen that the school lunch programme needs improvement. This is no easy task, but with a little creativity, it can be developed to address health and nutrition challenges in schools.

In many areas, simple above the ground gardens can help to grow crops to supplement and add variety to the food offered in schools. Above ground gardens can be used to grow fruits, avocados, tomatoes, onions etc

Bringing students together at lunch to share an appealing low cost nutritious meal adds value on many different learning levels. It is hard to teach pupils who are hungry.
