APR men’s volleyball club head coach Sammy Mutemi Mulinge is looking to build on the winning character that his men showed en route to claiming the 2023 Nyerere International Volleyball tournament which came to a close over the weekend in Arusha, Tanzania.

APR men’s volleyball club is among four teams that represented Rwanda at the tournament. The army side took part in the men’s category alongside Police while APR VC and RRA WVC competed in the women’s fray.

APR VC won the men’s tournament on Saturday October 15, after beating Rukinzo VC 3-1 sets (25-16, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23) in the final.

Mulinge hailed his men for the performance and vowed to build on it to even get getter in future competitions, mainly the national volleyball league.

"The tournament was good and with tough teams but we won it and we know we can do it league. We knew what we came here [Arusha] to do. We also knew that it was not easy but we were ready for the challenge ahead,” Mulinge said.

"I am happy with the result but we still have a lot of to do to improve our performance in the league” the Kenyan-born added.

Organised by Tanzania Amateur Volleyball Association (TAVA), the tournament Nyerere International Volleyball tournament takes place annually in commemoration of the death of the country’s founding father Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

Nyerere was born on April 14, 1922. He was a Tanzanian anti-colonialist and political scientist. He led Tanganyika, now Tanzania, as president from 1961 to 1962.
