Students at the Integrated Polytechnic Regional Centre–South (IPRC/South) have been urged to exploit available opportunities and invest their skills and strength in bringing about positive change within their communities and contributing toward the development of the country.
The call was made on Wednesday at the launch of the national civic education programme, locally known as Itorero, at the Huye-based learning institution.
It is the first time the polytechnic is organising civic education training for its students since its inception in 2012.
Over 1,500 students are taking part in the four-day programme which incorporates lectures on Rwandan history, Rwandan values and the country’s vision of achieving sustainable development as well as activities to support the most vulnerable individuals within the community.
Speaking at the function, Boniface Rucagu, the chairman of the National Itorero Commission, told the students that they had been given unequalled opportunity to lead positive lives.
"The government is investing a lot in educating the youth and nurturing them into responsible, productive and innovative citizens. A lot of efforts have been put in helping them to grow with positive attitudes and we hope you will make use of the opportunity,” Rucagu told the youth.
"Positive values and attitudes should always remain part and parcel of your daily lives,” he added.
The Southern Province Governor, Alphonse Munyantwari, told the youth that their role in advancing the national socio-economic transformation agenda remains critical.
He urged them to always strive to make a positive difference within their respective communities, telling them: "The country counts on you.”
"Work hard, be creative, don’t fear to explore new areas and initiate new things,” he told the students. "Be united, work in harmony, uphold positive values and join efforts to develop your country.”
