Pastor Abby BDP, real name Abraham Joseph Nganga, is the country representative of Ipsos Rwanda, a media monitoring firm. A pastor at Hope Restoration Church International, Nganga is also a gospel singer and an emcee. He spoke to Society Magazine’s Stephen Kalimba about his fashion sense. Excerpts;

As a person who wants to influence the youth, what determines your style?

I do many things that influence my style but I have to stay true to who I am. I meet corporate clients so I can’t go with a hat and chain, even though I like them. I want to give people the respect they deserve and I want to be respected too so I go for suits. I dress to connect with the youth in tight tops and sneakers. I like visible chains and caps when I go to emcee.

How do you reach out to the youth with your style?

Young people will open up to a person who looks like them. I dress like them, but not the young and crazy outfits. I want to be comfortable around them and vice versa.

For the suits, do you have a designer?

Not exactly.I like navy blue, black, gray or chocolate brown suits.I like the fitting type because I work out and I feel that they bring that out. I am a fan of Italian suits, if I were to get a lot of money I would go for Giorgio Armani and Hugo Boss.

What accessories do you recommend men to wear?

If you’re meeting a corporate client, a watch is important. A subtle chain can also do the trick.

What are your favourite accessories?

I like big face watches with leather straps. I have several bottles of cologne like Burberry, Stacy Adams and Polo. I also like lip balm, like Chap Stick. Lots of people say I’m like a girl because I pay attention to detail.

What fashion trends do you think men should avoid?

I have seen some men holding a purse, but no, get a wallet! Then there are Kitenge trousers,for an entertainer, they are okay but a regular guy, no. You need to be an entertainer to pull that look off.

Fashion tips to live by?

Let your identity influence your style if you’re a moral and principled person, don’t let culture or circumstances dictate. Dress according to your budget, a style you can maintain. Be tidy and presentable, whatever you wear will look worth a million. Wear the clothes, don’t let them wear you, clothes shouldn’t determine what you are, if you are a pastor, be a pastor in a suit, jeans or shorts.
