RwandAir has come out to explain circumstances under which $30,000 was stolen from the airline earlier this month.
Two airline staffers were arrested on January 5 in connection with the theft while one is still on the run, according to RwandAir management.
Police yesterday declined to confirm the arrests, saying investigations were ongoing.
But, in a statement, the airline explained that former staff and airline partner worked together in putting up an illegal network in processing online ticket sales as well as funds collection which led to the theft.
The statement said RwandAir was cooperating with the Police in investigating the case.
RwandAir assured the public that the airline operates under strict business operation policies and verification procedures which assisted its finance department in identifying the "illegal transactions still under Police investigations.”
"Our stakeholders should rest assured that the airline follows strict vetting procedures as part of the recruitment process and strict business operations procedures which will even be more tightened to avoid such occurrences in future,” John Mirenge, the RwandAir CEO is quoted in the statement as saying.
"Upon successful closure of the investigations, established legal measures will be followed to handle this case in the most transparent manner,” Mirenge said.
