The results for last year’s Primary Six and Senior Three national examinations will be released today, according to a statement from the Ministry of Education.

A total of 165,284 pupils (76,652 boys and 88,632 girls) sat their primary school exams, while 88,111 candidates completed their ordinary level.

Emmanuel Muvunyi, the deputy director-general in charge of examinations at Rwanda Education Board, said 337 examination centres were designated for pupils from the ordinary level section.

Schools will open for the new term on January 26, but the reporting date for Senior One and Four is yet to be confirmed by the ministry.

During these holidays, 1,082 new fully furnished classrooms and 444 new toilets have been constructed to accommodate the increasing number of students.

More than Rwf8 billion was injected by the government into setting up of school structures in all districts across the country.

According to Olivier Rwamukwaya, the minister of state for primary and secondary education, the new classrooms are part of the government’s plan to increase equitable access to 12-Year Basic Education.

"Since we started free universal education in Rwanda, we have seen tremendous results and today, young Rwandans have the opportunity to pursue different forms of higher education, such as university or technical training, because of a solid start at the primary and secondary level,” Rwamukwaya said.

The new classrooms, he said, will increase capacity thus allow more children to enroll in school as part of the efforts to reduce class sizes.
