Rwanda Athletics Federation is considering entering national athletes in the upcoming Kampala international marathon race slated for December 9.

The federation’s technical Director, Emmanuel Murenzi told Times Sport yesterday that the national body is considering sending local based athletes.

"The organisers of the marathon race invited us and we would not want to disappoint them by turning down their request,” "We are currently faced by financial constraints and I hope by that time, we could have found sponsors to facilitate the team’s participation in the race,” Murenzi said.

Meanwhile, Uganda Telecommunications Company, MTN has sunk 500 million Ugandan shillings (Frw. 163,000,000) into this year’s Kampala International marathon due December 9.

The amount for the fourth edition of the event organized by Ugandan Athletics Federation (UAF) is 100 million shillings (Frw.32,000,000) more than what was offered last year.

The half-marathon (21km) will be added to the already existing 10km and marathon races. The 10km race and half-marathon will have corporate and open categories.

Participants from Eritrea, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sudan, Djibouti, Rwanda and Burundi are expected to take part in Uganda’s biggest event on the Road Running calendar.

The Uganda Athletics Federation has reaffirmed that the proceeds from the event will go towards Red Cross’ Mama Bag and Return kit project, while most of the 500 million shillings will cater for the over 1,000 volunteers, prize money and logistics.
