Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee plans to organise monthly athletics competitions in a bid to increase the competitiveness of local athletes.
"We need to give a test to our athletes and measure their progress in the sport,” said the Rwanda National Olympic Committee Technical Director, Martin Koonce.
Koonce confirmed that the monthly competitions will focus mainly on Kigali-based clubs and will be held at Amahoro national stadium after which subsequent events will be hosted in different parts of the country targeting upcountry clubs.
Koonce added that: "We cannot measure the progress of our athletes when they are not competing regularly; therefore, we need to organise as many competitions as possible in order to give them (athletes) a chance to showcase their abilities to perform.”
The first competition dubbed ‘New Year 5 kilometer run’ is scheduled for this coming Saturday and will be co-sponsored by Rwanda National Olympics and Sports Committee and African Transformation Network.
