Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) yesterday impounded smuggled liquor worth Rwf5.5 million.

The liquor  was intercepted at Nyabugogo, a Kigali suburb, while being transported from Rubavu District, Western Province.

"The 239 bottles of Red and Black label were found stashed in a truck carrying timber. We suspect Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to be the origin,” said Robert Mugabe, the deputy commissioner investigations and enforcement at RRA.

By press time, the goods and truck were still at RRA’s Revenue Protection department in Gikondo.

 Police Spokesman Chief. Supt. Celestin Twahirwa confirmed that two people, the driver and his turn-boy    had been arrested and that investigations were ongoing to establish more people behind the racket.

The 2004 East African Community Customs Management Act to which Rwanda is party, states that a vehicle involved in smuggling is liable to permanent confiscation by authorities and it’s owner faces a fine of not more than $5,000.
