Rwanda National Police (RNP) yesterday handed over Rwf8 million to a Ugandan businessman part of the money which had been stolen from him in Kabale, Uganda. Augustine Tibemanya reportedly lost the money toward Christmas.

RNP intervened after Police in Kabale District arrested Hakim Ghadafi, one of the suspects who said he had sent some of the money to Rwanda.

Handing over the money, Chief Superintendent of Police Celestin Twahirwa, the Police spokesperson, said such crimes can be checked if regional police cooperate and share information on time.

"The money was stolen on December 22. Police in Kabale told us that a portion of it had been sent to Rwanda. We did our best and by December 24, we had arrested two girls who Ghadafi claimed had received the money. We were able to recover this amount we are handing over from them,” he said.

After getting back his money at the RNP headquarters in Kacyiru, Tibemanya said: "I commend RNP for the tremendous work they have done. I had lost hope of getting back my money,” Tibemanya said.

Tibemanya, alias Semogerere, recalled that robbers attacked him shortly after withdrawing the money from his Stanbic Bank account.

"I was robbed of sh169 million (about Rwf42.3m) at gun point,” he narrated.

Tibemanya was accompanied by a delegation of Ugandan police in Kabale headed by SP Bosco Arop, the Kabale District Police Commander. Police said other suspects are still on the run.

Police, meanwhile, called on Rwandans to be vigilant during today’s festivities to avoid falling victim to robbers.
