Her stage name, Knowless, was inspired by American R&B superstar Beyoncé Knowles. Born Jeanne d’Arc Ingabire Butera and currently managed under Kina Music, Butera released her debut album, Komeza, in December 2011. She has collaborated with numerous artistes, including Rwandans Danny, Paccy, Ciney, Jay Polly, Kamichi and Urban Boyz, and Ugandan group Benon and Vampos. In an interview with Donah Mbabazi, the singer opened up about her sense of style.

How would you describe your dress sense?

I don’t know how I can describe that because I can’t say I wear only one style. I mostly wear what I feel like when I wake up or if I see that it matches with the day.So I wear almost everything; jeans, dresses, skirts, it only depends on the day.

What are some of your favourite clothing items?

Jeans are my favourite. I love jeans a lot because they are what I prefer most of the time in my daily errands and they are mostly what I own.

Where do you shop for clothes?

I do it here in Rwanda but mostly if I want to do real shopping, I do it from Canada and China. Since I have friends there, they send stuff to me. Shopping from here depends on what I want,and that is whether I am going shopping for dresses, jeans or tops.

What do you consider when shopping for clothes?

My eyes help in making the choice. The colour or the fabric kicks in later after I have already fallen for the item. There are times you see a cloth and you just love it so if I see such, I mind about other details later.

What is your favourite fashion accessory?

I love ear pins a lot.

What’s your favourite clothing item on a guy?

I love suits, and it has to be fitting to impress me. I hate a guy who wears sagging pants; it’s a real turn off for me. But a guy in a classy suit grabs my attention.

What’s your favourite scent?

I love men’s perfume, it’s what I wear. I love Armani code and Givenchy.

 What is the most expensive fashion accessory that you own?

I have accessories I got from my last trip to Dubai, they are three chains but each cost$400.They were really beautiful and though they were expensive I had to have them. I haven’t worn them but they are really beautiful.

Any fashion advice?

In regards to fashion, according to me, everyone should have their own style. One should take fashion to mean comfort such that if any one sees them they can say that the person has taste and is well versed with fashion. One can even wear slippers and pull off a style.Therefore, fashion should be one’s own. Another thing is that fashion is all about knowing yourself, as in your body shape and colour.
