Police in Gakenke District are investigating the death of a village leader in Karanbo Sector whose body was found under a bridge.

The body of Aimable Ngendahimana, was found underneath the bridge separating Nemba and Gakenke sectors on Tuesday morning.

Ndendahimana, 60, was the leader of Bukweto village.

Police and local leaders said the body, which was taken to Nemba Hospital for post-mortem, had no physical injuries.

Superintendent Christopher Semuhungu, the Northern Province police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying investigations were ongoing to ascertain the cause of his death.

"The body was found under the bridge and we are still investigating the cause of his death as we wait for post-mortem results,” Semuhungu said.

Residents said the deceased was seen drinking late during the previous night in Gakenke town.

"We suspect he might have failed to cross the bridge because the body had no injuries and had all his documents and phone,” said a resident.
