The Education Times recently discussed with students from various schools about whether the drinking age should be lowered or kept at 18.

We should not allow children below 18 years to take beer because it affects their level of concentration. Besides, children don’t have any source of income meaning they will resort to theft to buy alcohol.

If the drinking age were lowered, it would be disastrous. Most people at 18 are still in school and do not deserve the freedom to consume alcohol. Such a law would encourage vices like theft, escapism and promiscuity. Consequently, the child could be suspended from school or can contract HIV/Aids and other STDs.

Alcohol is not good especially for young people. I think any one below 18 years of age must not taste alcohol. Ofcourse those below  18  don’t drive so they can’t cause accidents but they can be victims.

 I do not think minors should engage in drinking for both health and monetary reasons. Most children get money from their parents to facilitate their education and not drinking. That money must not be wasted on beer.

In my view, no one should be allowed to drink before they are 21 years of age and above. I believe at that age the brain is developed enough to judge between what is good and bad. It is very sad that so many teenagers today are drinking without any control. This recklessness is not good for one’s life.

It makes me sad to see young people drinking all sorts of alcohol. I wonder whether they know the consequences  of their actions. One is likely to become an addict when they start drinking at an early age. I, therefore don’t think the age limit should be lowered. I hate to see a student drop out of school because of alcoholism.

Alcohol makes some people do crazy things such as fighting and engaging in unprotected sex. Others even become addicts and end up stealing to satisfy their desire. The issue of what age people should be allowed to drink alcohol does not even cross my mind. Rwandans should focus on developmental issues, not destructive ones.
