At least three people suspected to be part of a gang that breaks into houses to steal electronic appliances, were yesterday arrested in Rwamagana.
The suspects were netted in a Police operation conducted in Kigabiro Sector at dawn after a tip off from residents.
Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi, the Eastern Region Police spokesman, said the suspects were part of a racket that had been stealing electronics.
In the operation, Police recovered television sets, satellite dishes and home theatres stolen from homes. It is alleged that the suspects were also accomplices in other crimes such as snatching ladies bags, vandalizing cars from which they steal radios and computers.
"We had information about their criminal acts and we have been looking for them. We got information of their whereabouts from members of the public, leading to their arrest. We commend those who volunteer to give police information,” Kayigi said.
"We have a good working relationship with the community, and in most cases, they are the ones who give us information of those involved in criminal acts and in some cases they even apprehend them red-handed and call us to pick them”.
The police spokesman further called on residents to be vigilant particularly in the forth coming end of the year festive season.
"We normally anticipate an increase in robberies during Christmas and end of year. The public should be vigilant. One way to do it is to update the police,” he noted.
Meanwhile, residents commended police efforts to fight the robberies.
"There is a group of youth, some of whom are well known to be a menace to the community. They have been stealing electronics from our homes for quite some time. That the police are now targeting them gives hope,” said Egide Mulisa.
