Police FC will shift their attention from abysmal league form to where they excelled last season when they take on Rayon Sports at the weekend seeking to defend the Ombudsman Cup. The reigning champions will be keen to defend their crown in the semi-final of the two-day competition meant to highlight the ills of corruption.
The competition is set for December 6-7 at Amahoro stadium.
"We want to make Police proud and therefore we shall come all out to win the Ombudsman Cup this weekend. Our confidence is back especially after last weekend’s win against Isonga,” admitted Mbungo.
The law enforcers had been low on confidence following a six-game winless streak in the National Football League but against the newly promoted Isonga on Sunday, they came alive after a solid performance.
The return of striker Kipson Atuheire and Jimmy Mbaraga’s presence will provide fresh air of buoyancy to Police in the absence of injured captain Jacques Tuyisenge who suffered an ankle injury during the Amavubi- Morocco friendly two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Rayon Sports head coach Andy Magloire Mfutila is excited about the prospect of winning a trophy less than a month into his new job.
"We want to perform well in this tournament and of course we are aiming to be crowned champions,” Mfutila said. The last time the two sides faced off was in a preseason friendly when Police defeated Rayon Sports 2-0.
In the other game, APR take on AS Kigali as former Amavubi tactician Eric Nshimiyimana seeks revenge against the army side that defeated his side 2-1 in October in the first round league encounter.
The winner will walk away with Rwf3m while the runners-up will bag Rwf2m.
