RENOWNED long distance runner Dieudonné Disi clocked 1:09:16 to win the Fort-de-France over the weekend.
Disi fended off competition from Russia’s Andrey Safonov by a microsecond to win the 30th edition of the annual 21km event that attracted more than 12,000 participants from France and abroad.
The 34-year-old, who plies his trade with Club Colonial in France, has been in fine form this year winning several local competitions including the 15km Martigues Carro race in May.
The double Olympian also won the 26th edition of the Courants de la Liberté in July and also finished second in the Carnaval half marathon in March in France as well.
Disi is the most celebrated Rwandan athlete and among other achievements won the men’s 10000m at the 2005 Francophone Games in Niamey, Niger. He defended his title in the next edition in Beirut, Lebanon in 2009.
He also represented Rwanda at the 2010 New Delhi and 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games as well as the 2007 and 2009 World Championships in Osaka, Japan and Berlin, Germany respectively.
He also finished sixth at the 2007 World Road Running Championships in Udine, Italy as well as the 2008 World Half Marathon Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
