Jean de Dieu Uwineza scored a brilliant goal at the half time mark to guide Gicumbi to a shock 1-0 victory over champions APR yesterday in the National Football League at the Kigali Regional Stadium.

Uwineza’s strike ended the army side’s eight-game unbeaten run which gives rivals Rayon Sports a chance to go top if they defeat Sunrise in Rwamagana this afternoon.

After sloppy defending from a rebounded loose ball that granted Uwineza the lone strike, Kwizera was in total control at the back and a goal kick in injury time almost found its way to the back of the net however, his efforts were not enough to secure a point or a win for APR.

"Gicumbi really wanted to win this game. They came all out and put a lot of pressure on us. The goal we conceded was a great goal. It is goals like that, that win you games,” admitted Vincent Mashami, APR assistant coach.

Ruremesha, a former coach at Rayon Sports has not only defeated the record league champions to secure maximum points but has also laid a foundation for the Blues to use this as a stepping stone to go top of the league table with a win today.

A contented Ruremesha mentioned that, "This win is very good for us. If you remember what happened to us last week against Rayon Sports, we should have won but instead we lost 0-2.

Clearly, today we had intentions to win and yes, we can beat any team just like they can beat us.”

"Determination was very key for us today and we worked together as a team. We were motivated as well,” added Ruremesha whose side is now eighth on the table standings with 11 points from nine games.

Elsewhere, Espoir shocked Kiyovu with a 1-0 win at the Mumena Stadium to move into 10th position with 10 points.

Rayon Sports’ head coach Andy Magloire Mfutila told Times Sports that victory is very important today and that new signing Jerome Sina will add to the creativity of his side alongside striker Peter Otema.
