The trial of musician, Kizito Mihigo, and three others suspects charged with terrorism took a new twist today when the singer asked court to allow him sack his defence lawyers.
Appearing before the High Court in Kimihurura, Mihigo told the judges that he opted to stand trial without counsel saying that his lawyers were complicating the trial.
Mihigo has been represented by two lawyers, Felix Musore and John Bigarama.
During the previous hearing, the advocates had pleaded that their client was innocent despite him having entered a guilty plea.
"I would like to know from court if I am allowed to terminate my lawyers,” Mihigo asked the judges.
Asked why he was taking this decision, he responded; "I pleaded guilty from the beginning but the way my lawyers are arguing the case, they sound like I actually pleaded not guilty.”
Mihigo appeared in court with his written submissions which he handed to the judge and asked they consider these submissions instead of what his lawyers say.
Bigarama who was present in court said he was surprised by his client’s sudden decision, saying that prior to the commencement of the court session they had met and spoke but he never hinted at terminating them.
After this submission, Bigarama walked out of court.
