National team captain Aphrodis Nyirinkwaya returned 317 gross over four rounds as Rwanda finished third at the East Africa Community Golf Shield at the Entebbe Club over the weekend.

Aloys Nsabimana settled for 324, one stroke ahead of Celestine Habineza as Rwanda combined for 958 gross at the oldest golf club in Uganda which was also celebrating 113 years since inauguration.

Kigali Golf Club manager Herman Rugwihimba explained that, "The grass was dry and that affected the players who were training on a different exterior at the Kigali Golf Club where it has been raining recently.”

According to Rugwihimba, if it had been a rainy season in Entebbe just like it is in Kigali, then Rwanda would have performed much better at the tournament that also attracted Kenya, Burundi and Uganda.

Kenyan captain Nicholas Simwa, who returned 286 gross guided his side to the main trophy finishing one stroke ahead of Uganda’s Willy Kitata.

Kenya’s Alfred Nandwa, John Karichu and Simwa accumulated a team high 872 gross to win the inaugural tournament. Uganda was second with 903 gross while Burundi finished in fourth position with 1021 at the 72-par golf course.
