Rwamagana businessman held over employee assault

A businessman in Rwamagana town has been arrested after he reportedly beat up one of his employees who later died in hospital. The businessman identified only as Bizimana was arrested last Friday and remains in custody at Rwamagana Police Station.

A businessman in Rwamagana town has been arrested after he reportedly beat up one of his employees who later died in hospital.

The businessman identified only as Bizimana was arrested last Friday and remains in custody at Rwamagana Police Station.

He is expected to appear before court today.

The body of the victim identified as Innocent Niyonsenga has been lying at Rwamagana Hospital morgue since last Wednesday, pending transfer to Kacyiru Hospital for post-mortem.

The deceased prior to his death had complained that his boss, Bizimana had assaulted him after two sacks of cement and other items went missing at a construction site in the district.

The incident occurred in Cyanya Cell, Kigabiro Sector in Rwamagana District.

Bizimana has, however, denied assaulting the victim.

But according to Eustace Mutasi, the deputy secretary in charge of finance, Stecoma-Rwamagana branch, the deceased died due to heavy injuries inflicted on him by Bizimana.Stecoma brings together constructors and artisans in the country.

Mutasi told The New Times that even though eye witnesses testified before the police that the deceased had been tortured by the businessman, before his death, medics at the hospital said he died of malaria.

Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, who doubles as the Regional Police spokesperson and Eastern Region Judicial Police officer confirmed the incident.

He said efforts to transfer the body to Kacyiru Hospital for further examination were underway.
