Police crowned off what has a been a phenomenon season by adding the Carre d’AS handball tournament trophy to the league title after beating rivals APR 31-28 in the final on Saturday at Kimisagara youth sports centre.
En-route to the final, Police beat ES Kigoma 25-20 while APR eliminated Nyakabanda with a 27-25 score in the semi-finals on the same day. Nyakabanda took third place.
"All the teams wanted to win, it was not easy but we showed character in both matches we played and we are happy to lift the cup,” said Police head coach Antoine Ntabanganyimana.
Police have also won the national league, Labour Day and Liberation day tournaments. It is Police handball club’s third Carre d’AS triumph in as many seasons.
Ntabanganyimana added: "The team is well supported by the management both financially and psychologically.”
The Rwanda Handball Federation president Theogene Utabarutse said the tournament was well organized despite lack of sponsors.
"We are glad the whole season has gone so well and we hope next season will be even better,” stated Utabarutse.
He noted: "We had planned to raise about Rwf5 million to invest in this tournament but failed to achieve, nonetheless we still managed to organise it.”
