Three drivers have been arrested in Kigali over attempts to bribe Police officers after they were found violating traffic rules.

The three were arrested separately in Gasabo District last week and are currently detained at Gisozi Police Station.

The bribes ranged between Rwf2,000 and Rwf5,000, Police said.

One of the suspects reportedly offered the inducement to avoid penalties for over-loading.

Another also offered a bribe of Rwf2,000 to prevent the officer from penalising him for not having a transport authorisation, normally issued by the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority.

Speaking from the Police station on Saturday, the suspects admitted to the crime.

Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali Modeste Mbabazi said people should know that corruption hampers development.

He added that drivers should not think of giving bribes to traffic officers but be keen to respect road safety rules.

People should call Police in case an officer asks for such illegal favours, he said, adding that officers are not deployed on the roads to search for money but to ensure road and traffic safety.
