GICUMBI — Women parliamentary candidates who hail from the Northern Province on Monday launched their parliamentary bid in Gicumbi district.

Richard Gakwerere, the district electoral commission official presided over the campaigns, during which each of the 23 contenders was given five minutes to present her political agenda to the electorate at Hotel Urumuli.

The electoral college which elects women includes members of the District Administrative Committee, district and Sector women committees, the District Advisory Council and women representatives in Provinces.

During the Monday rally, the majority of the candidates campaigned on a wide range of issues including spearheading gender equality, promotion of women cooperative societies, advocating for children rights, good governance and empowering girl students with ICT skills among other things.

"After traversing area districts, the electorate shall elect four women parliamentary representatives on September 16,” said Gakwerere. The campaigns were slated to continue in Rulindo district on Tuesday.

Also present during the campaigns was the Mayor of Gicumbi district Bonane Nyangezi and European Union (EU) election observers.
