Richard Gakuba became the first golfer to win a hat-trick of mugs in the inaugural Mutzig competition after a stellar performance on Saturday at Kigali Golf Club.
After back to back mugs in June and July, the handicap 15 player continued with his rich vein of form playing seven under at the Par-72 golf course in Nyarutarama to finish atop in the second competitive category (handicap 10-18). After his heroics, he received great applauds from the golf club.
"He has been playing some magnificent golf lately and I think deserves the credit,” one golfer said.
After receiving the mug trophy for keeps, Gakuba said that his recent success on the course is down to early preparations and good judgment on the course.
"I’m excited about the hat-trick but I think it is down to having good preparations a day or two before the competition,” he shrugged.
Gakuba’s handicap is now down to 13.
Rajan Tiwari and Phillip Jacob also won back to back mugs after winning in the respective groups.
Tiwari beat Jack Kayonga by four strokes to top the ‘cream of the crop’ category (handicap 0-9) with 71net. It was a one-man show in the third competitive group (handicap 19-28) as Philip Jacob stroked 67net to finish top.
Jacob’s handicap is now down to 21
Vicky Suazo topped the ladies category with 77net while Esther Mukagasana returned to the lime light after a gripping game.
The National team player shot 65 net beating off challenges from Jules Dusabe and Olivier Munyaneza.
