Abunzi are Mediation Committees which were established 10 years ago as a way of advancing social cohesion, giving Rwandans an opportunity to settle disputes amicably without going to courts of law.
The documentary explains how disputes such as land wrangles can be resolved using this grassroots system.
The inspirational and informative documentary was produced by Hillywood, Rwanda’s movie power house located in Gaculiro and it was released on October 10.
According to Eric Gatera, the managing director of Hillywood, this new initiative of conflict resolution shows how Rwanda’s justice system has matured over the years as it comes up with new ways to tackle community disputes.
The impact of film is to raise awareness about certain issues, promote culture as well as entertain the audience and that is exactly what such films do by telling the Rwandan story through the eyes of Rwandans.
The documentary was supported by Rwanda Initiative for Sustainable Development in partnership with the Ministry of Justice.
