A multi-million four-storey taxi park is set to be constructed in the southern town of Muhanga to respond to match a growing transport sector.
The park, estimated to cost over Rwf2 billion, is expected to be complete in a year. Construction works started on Wednesday with the laying of a foundation stone at the site.
It is a project co-owned by the Rwanda Federation of Transport Cooperatives (RFTC) and Muhanga District.
The park, in the centre of Muhanga town, will encompass several sections that include a parking lot, a gas station and a multi-storey building that will house offices of transport companies, shops and an entertainment section, among others.
Col. (Rtd) Twahirwa Dodo, the head of RFTC, said they will do their best to ensure that construction activities are complete within the set period.
Twahirwa, who was speaking at the launch of the works, said they have already mobilised funds towards the construction.
"All is set; nothing will stop us from beating the deadline,” Twahirwa said.
Muhanga mayor Yvonne Mutakwasuku said this is yet another significant step towards the development of the town and noted that once complete the park will ease movement of goods and people, while at the same time improve the image of the emerging city.
"We have always wanted to build a modern park because we consider it one of the necessities in our journey to development,” she said, adding that the project will create jobs for youth.
