GICUMBI — Residents of Kinihira in Gicumbi district have received Frw750,000 meant for energy saving stoves. The money was donated by Rwanda Furniture Works, a local transit company in the country.

The money was handed over by Harminder Singh, the Director of Rwanda Furniture Works at a function in Kinihira at the weekend. Cally Alles, the Director of Sorwathe Tea Company received the donation on behalf of the residents.

Harminder said the donation is part of their social responsibility to assist the less privileged whilst other community development projects.

He explained, "As successful and generous members of the community, we have a responsibility to give back to our communities and also help those that are less fortunate hence the desirable need to contribute to common good.”

Alles said the money will be invested in a local Kinihira association that fights environment degradation by making environmentally friendly energy saving stoves.

According to Alles, the money would be committed to the stoves such that residents can access them at subsidised prices.

The market price of one stove is Frw3,000 but residents will be able to get the facilities at half price. He continued that Rwanda Furniture Works has always been eager to help the community and now it had come to pass.

The energy saving stoves are cost effective and environmentally friendly as they don’t require much firewood and charcoal.

The donation comes after the Rotary Club Kigali in partnership with USA Rotary Club and Esther’s Aid donated 26 sun ovens to residents in the same area.
