As NATO and the EU think of reassessing their relations with the Kremlin to prevent further Russian aggression, a cold war is looming.

This comes amid fears Russia could cut oil and gas flows in the row over Georgia.

The conflict in the region began on 7 August when Georgia tried to regain control of South Ossetia by force, which was followed by a Russian counter-attack deep into Georgia. 

Ominous Russian threats of a new Cold War have set off alarm bells in the West after Moscow formally recognised two breakaway republics in war-torn Georgia.

Moscow ignored international appeal in order to announce the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, after its invasion of Georgia three weeks ago.

Its move poses a direct challenge to British and US pledges of support for the beleaguered democracy’s territorial integrity.
