The Chinese Embassy in Rwanda on Thursday donated equipment worth over 15,000 USD toThe New Times.

The equipment included four professional cameras ten computers.

While handing over the equipment, the Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda, Shen Yongxiang thanked The New Times for the professional work that they are doing.

"I read your paper everyday and am very thankful for the way you cover the events in the country,” the Ambassador said, adding that the embassy is willing to support the media as it plays an important role in the development of a country.

Sam Sewanyana the IT expert at The New Times said the equipment will boost quality of company’s products that include The New Times, a daily newspaper, Izuba Rirashe a Kinyarwanda weekly and Outlook, a quarterly magazine.

"Looking at the specifications, the computers are powerful,. The Laptops will be used by Journalists to cover stories on site considering that the demand for news has become immediate.”

Timothy Kisambira, one of the company’s photographers said that the new professional cameras will enhance the use of images. "I am really excited because this is one upgrade that I have been looking forward to.”  He added that with the new equipment more journalists with interest in photography can now acquire on-the-job training.

Collin Haba, the MD of The New Times, thanked the Chinese embassy for their support.

The embassy has also given scholarships to three journalists from The New Times who have now completed their masters degrees.
