THE 2014/15 National Football League starts this afternoon with traditional giants APR, Rayon Sport and Police looking for a flying start in a season that promises to be too close to call.
APR won last season's title with 64 points after scoring 46 goals and conceded just 13 goals. The Club's Serbian Coach says his youthful side is capable of repeating that.
"We didn't perform well in preseason because we drew many friendly matches but the fans should not read too much into that.
"I have good and talented players who are gaining technical experience as each day passes and I believe our tactical discipline will be a key factor in as far as our club's ambition of retaining the league title is concerned," Ljupko Petrovic said.
The military side host Musanze at Kigali Regional stadium tomorrow afternoon with only two players injured-striker, Farouk Ruhinda and veteran goalkeeper Jean Claude Ndoli.
League runners up Rayon Sport take on Amagaju this afternoon with the blues still hunting for a coach, however acting coach Sosethe Habimana is desperate to kickoff the season with a win to convince club management into keeping him permanently.
"My priority is winning tomorrow's match, I am not bothered whether I will be in this job for long," Habimana said after yesterday's training session.
Rayon Sport is understood to be in advanced talks with former U-17 and U-20 Amavubi coach Richard Tardy who is expected to take charge once personal terms are agreed on.
Although APR and Rayon Sport are favourites to win the league, they will be wary of a Police side that performed well in the Cecafa Club Championship.
Andre Cassa Mbungo has been blunt saying that his side are favourites too and has challenged his players to make history by winning the league for the first time. Police finished 3rd last year.
The former Amavubi Assistant Coach is known to work with shoe string budgets but produces results. In other league matches, Isonga travel to Rubavu for a date against Etincelles while Espoir hosts Mukura in Rusizi in three of the matches set to be played today.
