The reintroduction of the Abunzi system in 2004 was motivated by the need to reduce the backlog of court cases, to dispense justice and make it affordable and accessible for citizens.

In ancient times, Abunzi were men known within their communities for personal integrity, and mediated in conflict management.

Currently, the women-dominated committees of Abunzi have provided space for women to freely report and seek amicable solutions to conflicts related to gender inequality and abuse. One of the members of the committee, Dorcus Zaninka, talks about how peaceful conflict management has led to reconciliation in her community. Turn to pages 18 and 19 for more on this story.

After living at home and being told what to do literally everyday of your life, it comes as no surprise that one would wish to move out the second they are old enough to do so. This week, one young lady, against her parents’ wishes, moved out and is now in a rather tight situation. See pages 14 and 15 for this story..
