Remy Maurice Ufitinema, an editor with the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA), won an award for a story on the challenges in the country’s labour sector.

The competition was launched earlier this year as part of a project dubbed; "Awareness Raising and capacity building on human rights in Rwanda with emphasis on labour rights.” 

It was funded by the European Union and the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Out of the stories that were submitted, five were shortlisted for their excellent coverage of various topics including, transport safety for workers, child labour and teachers’ job security.

The award winning story concentrated on the labour law for maternity leave which reduced the full-pay for mothers on leave.

"I am happy to have won the award. It was also a previlege to have participated in the training on how to use international labour standards in reporting. Now, my stories on labour issues will be much better and, as an editor, I am in position to share my skills,” Ufitinema said.

Maura Miraglio, the programme officer at the International Training Centre of ILO, said: "The prize is an opportunity to spread information on international labour standards in Rwanda and will give the author of the best story a grant to attend an international event for the media at the biggest UN campus, in Turin, Italy.”
