Dear Aunt Silvia,

I am a 50 year old businessman, married and a father of one. My wife gave birth to our first born child 2 weeks ago. Surprisingly when my mother came to see her, she commented on something very strong and everyone who was there ignored her remarks except me.

They said she is an old woman. Later on, as I was resting, I pondered on her words. She said that of all her family members that she knows, no one resembles my child.

According to her-my son should have at least a resemblance to one of my family members, or the child should at least have one thing which resembles me, his father. How can I determine if the child is mine or not?

Egide.

Dear Egide,

It is always said, where there is smoke there is fire. Your mother must have seen something very different in your child that suggested otherwise.

Make no haste in making a decision as to whether the child belongs to you or not. A child does not necessarily have to resemble his father or family members, remember this child is the fruit of you and your wife, therefore the child can as well take from his maternal side.

Since your mother has raised your curiosity; medical wise, you can determine the child’s paternity by testing on the newborn child using umbilical cord blood, an easy and painless procedure, this procedure is called DNA test.

You need not to worry because the results can be availed from 3- 7 working days depending on the institution.
