TEN Police officers attached to the department of Traffic and Road Safety completed a week-long training of trainers’ course on use of the newly acquired ‘Advanced Speed Laiser’ used to measure the speed of cars.
Chief Supt. Egide Ruzigamanzi, the Deputy Commissioner for the traffic department, while speaking at the closure of the course, yesterday, said the course is among the wide range of measures Rwanda National Police (RNP) has adopted to curb road carnage.
He challenged the participants to use the skills acquired to curb the menace of road accidents caused by speeding motorists.
The Advanced Speed Laiser machine has the capacity to measure speed, record video, and identify plate numbers of vehicles unlike the previous one which could only indicate the speed.
A joint meeting between RNP and institutions charged with ensuring road safety in August, agreed to among others oversee the installation of speed governors in public vehicles and heavy trucks, establish roadside stations and scale-up the issuance of vocational cards to regulate performance of drivers and monitor hours of operations of drivers.
