The Minister for Local Government, Francis Kaboneka, has urged local leaders and security personnel to work towards sustainable security and development.

The minister was speaking during a meeting with local leaders from all districts in the Southern Province in Huye District yesterday.

The meeting, in line with the ‘Governance Month’ which started on September 22, was attended by local authorities from the grassroots to the provincial level.

"We need concerted effort to address security and development challenges,” Minister Kaboneka said.

He challenged the leaders to be patriotic and reside in areas where they work so that they serve people better.

At the same event, the Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana, noted that the community policing approach is inevitable in the pursuit of sustainable security and development.

He cited cross-border and domestic crimes, negative ideology, human security, corruption and road accidents as some of the causes of insecurity.

"Community policing is the way to go to ensure further progress,” IGP Gasana emphasised.

The Police Chief noted that RNP has joined forces with regional and international security institutions and organisations to effectively counter cross-border security challenges like human and drug trafficking, money laundering and other financial crimes.
