Editor, On Tuesday, I read a story on the United States Airforce Academy website about Agnes Mutoni.
She is a young Rwandan girl who is determined to break barriers and inspire more women into joining the military. I was touched by her perseverance and hard work which earned her a spot into the academy. It goes to show how far women in Rwanda have come and what they are willing to take on.
However, it is disappointing that some parents discourage their daughters from joining an institution that is credited with keeping our country safe. People should lose the mentality of thinking that some professions are probably much safer than others.
If we want to be seen as equal to men, then let’s act like it other than discouraging brave, ambitious young girls from joining certain professions. That will be limiting their talents, ambition and intellect.
Thank you Agnes for inspiring young women, representing Rwandan women and for your courage and determination. I hope other young girls will follow in your footsteps.
