GASABO - The Rwanda Environmental Management Authority (REMA) Thursday at Hilltop Hotel started a two-days training for student leaders from various universities in the country.

The training was aimed at raising awareness to the student leaders about the new trends in environmental management and conservation as well as cultivating cultures of environmental consciousness and individual responsibility in this regard.

"Students being the future of the country and REMA being an institution in charge of ensuring a better future through promoting environmental safety, the students’ leaders were a strategic group to make ambassadors of this prudent cause,” said Sebastian Dusabeyezu, the Director of Environmental Education, Institution support and outreach.

The training was attended by student leaders from different higher institutions of learning in the country under the General Association of Students Forum, their umbrella association.

During an interview with The New Times, one of the participants and Vice Guild President and representative of Umutara University, Ingabire Florence, said, "We appreciate the training. It’s going to benefit us individually as well as our communities,  more so those who are ignorant about environmental management. We shall pass the message to them.”

Among the aspects to be discussed and trained about are the major challenges affecting environment in Rwanda, the relationship between poverty and environment, Environmental Impact Assessment, Biodiversity management, the causes of Ozone layer depletion, to mention but a few.
