The Rwanda National Police, Saturday joined residents of Nyanza District in a monthly community exercise, Umuganda, where they rehabilitated feeder roads in Busasamana Sector that link communities to business centres.

They also cleared plots where the RNP will construct houses it donated to vulnerable families in the district.

The first house was handed to its beneficiary in June during the annual Police Week exercise. The donation falls in the force’s human security programmes and the Memorandum of Understanding signed between RNP and Nyanza in particular.

The Police supports community development in health, poverty eradication by giving out livestock and helping in tree planting to prevent soil erosion and environmental protection.

It’s in the same framework that the police recently trained youth volunteers in crime prevention.Shortly after the community work, the Governor of the Southern Province, Alphonse Munyentwari, commended the police for its continued efforts to support community development and maintaining public order.

He appealed to residents to always work together with police in activities that contribute to national development.

The Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K Gasana, said RNP considers proactive policing through Police-Public partnership as an effective approach in crime prevention.

The force, he noted, supports community development as one way of preventing crimes arising out of poverty and ignorance.

"Peace cannot be reached if we still have homeless families and development would not be achieved if there is no security and that’s the reason police is engaged in such development activities” IGP Gasana said.
